To practice as a registered nurse (RN) in Prince Edward Island, you must be registered with the Prince Edward Island College of Nurses and Midwives (PEICNM).
It is illegal to practise as a registered nurse without a valid PEICNM registration.
To become a registered nurse, applicants must meet the following requirements as set out in PEICNM’s regulations and bylaws:
Requirements:
- Successful completion of an undergraduate degree/diploma program in nursing that has been approved by the PEICNM Council.
- Successful completion of NCLEX-RN exam or CRNE (prior to January 2015).
- Has worked as a RN for a minimum of 450 hours in the previous 3 years.
- Holds, or has held, a RN registration in another Canadian jurisdiction.
- Proof of liability insurance.
- Has not been convicted of any offence that would render them unfit for nursing practice.
- Entitled to work in Canada.
- Reasonable proficiency in written and spoke English in accordance with the PEICNM English Language Proficiency Policy.
- Has paid the fee(s) established by the Bylaws.
This section is for registered nurses who want to apply to PEICNM and ARE CURRENTLY registered to practice in another Canadian province or territory.
Step 1 PEICNM Profile:
Create your PEICNM profile online. Please ensure all fields are complete.
Step 2 Application:
From your dashboard select “Apply” and complete all required sections of the Canadian RN Application.
Step 3 Proof of Identity:
Upload a photo of government issued photo ID.
Upload a photo of birth certificate.
*If your name does not match the name on your birth certificate, please provide a legal document of name change.
Step 4 Criminal Record Check:
Submit a criminal record check. Please see PEICNM’s Criminal Record Check Policy.

- For criminal record checks from other sources such as the local police or RCMP, PEICNM requires the original stamped copy be sent to us by mail at 1 – 45 Paramount Drive, Charlottetown, PE C1E 0C6
- Criminal record checks are valid for six months from the date of issue.
Step 5 Jurisprudence:
Complete the required RN jurisprudence exam from your dashboard.
Step 6 Fees:
- Submit and pay the applicable application fee.
